Ten Gods

Hurting Officer (伤官)

Hurting Officer (伤官) is one of the Ten Gods — labels for how each stem relates to your Day Master. It covers bold expression, talent, critique and breaking convention.

01

Definition of Hurting Officer (伤官)

Hurting Officer (伤官) is the stem whose element is the element the Day Master generates, opposite polarity. The name only describes a relation; it changes with the Day Master. Its core themes are bold expression, talent, critique and breaking convention.

Every Ten God belongs to one of five families: companions, output, wealth, officer and resource. Hurting Officer (伤官) is in the output family together with Eating God (食神); the two differ only by polarity.

03

Constructive and excessive expressions

  • Constructive: originality, performance, sharp analysis, reform.
  • In excess or poorly balanced: friction with authority, arrogance, saying too much.

Which expression applies depends on balance: a Ten God that supplies what the Day Master lacks is usually read constructively; one that piles onto an already heavy side is read as excess.

The Ten Gods follow the same generating and controlling cycles as the five elements, which lets you trace how one theme feeds or restrains another.

Hurting Officer (伤官) in luck and annual pillars

A Ten God does not have to be in the natal chart to matter. When a luck pillar or annual pillar brings Hurting Officer (伤官), its themes — bold expression, talent, critique and breaking convention — come forward for that period. The calculator labels the Ten God of every luck pillar and of the annual pillar you select.

  • If the natal chart lacks Hurting Officer (伤官), a period that brings it is often read as introducing that theme.
  • If the natal chart already has plenty, the same period can tip it into excess.
  • Combinations or clashes between the incoming stem and natal stems modify how strongly it acts.

08

Questions for reflection

  • Where in your life do the themes of bold expression, talent, critique and breaking convention show up most clearly?
  • When does it feel constructive (originality, performance, sharp analysis, reform) and when does it tip into friction with authority, arrogance, saying too much?
  • How does Eating God (食神) — the same family with opposite polarity — compare in your experience?

09

Common misreading

It "hurts" the Direct Officer in the five-element sense (it controls it); it does not mean harming people.

Ten God names come from classical Chinese and sound dramatic in translation. Read them as labels of relations, then look at balance and the luck pillars before drawing any conclusion.
