Ten Gods

Friend (比肩)

Friend (比肩) is one of the Ten Gods — labels for how each stem relates to your Day Master. It covers self, peers, independence and equal partners.

01

Definition of Friend (比肩)

Friend (比肩) is the stem whose element is same element as the Day Master and same polarity. The name only describes a relation; it changes with the Day Master. Its core themes are self, peers, independence and equal partners.

Every Ten God belongs to one of five families: companions, output, wealth, officer and resource. Friend (比肩) is in the companion family together with Rob Wealth (劫财); the two differ only by polarity.

Which stem is Friend (比肩) for each Day Master

03

Constructive and excessive expressions

  • Constructive: self-reliance, team spirit among equals, the stamina to keep going.
  • In excess or poorly balanced: stubbornness, competition for the same resources, difficulty accepting guidance.

Which expression applies depends on balance: a Ten God that supplies what the Day Master lacks is usually read constructively; one that piles onto an already heavy side is read as excess.

04

Friend (比肩) in the cycle of Ten Gods

The Ten Gods follow the same generating and controlling cycles as the five elements, which lets you trace how one theme feeds or restrains another.

07

Friend (比肩) in luck and annual pillars

A Ten God does not have to be in the natal chart to matter. When a luck pillar or annual pillar brings Friend (比肩), its themes — self, peers, independence and equal partners — come forward for that period. The calculator labels the Ten God of every luck pillar and of the annual pillar you select.

  • If the natal chart lacks Friend (比肩), a period that brings it is often read as introducing that theme.
  • If the natal chart already has plenty, the same period can tip it into excess.
  • Combinations or clashes between the incoming stem and natal stems modify how strongly it acts.

08

Questions for reflection

  • Where in your life do the themes of self, peers, independence and equal partners show up most clearly?
  • When does it feel constructive (self-reliance, team spirit among equals, the stamina to keep going) and when does it tip into stubbornness, competition for the same resources, difficulty accepting guidance?
  • How does Rob Wealth (劫财) — the same family with opposite polarity — compare in your experience?

09

Common misreading

It is not automatically "bad for money"; whether peers compete for or share wealth depends on the whole chart.

Ten God names come from classical Chinese and sound dramatic in translation. Read them as labels of relations, then look at balance and the luck pillars before drawing any conclusion.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Friend (比肩) in BaZi?
The stem whose element is same element as the Day Master and same polarity. Themes: self, peers, independence and equal partners.
I have no Friend (比肩) in my chart. Is that bad?
Not necessarily. Missing stars can be supplied by luck pillars and annual pillars, and the chart is read as a whole.
I have several Friend (比肩). What does it mean?
The theme is emphasised. Whether it reads as constructive (self-reliance, team spirit among equals, the stamina to keep going) or excessive (stubbornness, competition for the same resources, difficulty accepting guidance) depends on the Day Master's strength.
Do hidden Friend (比肩) count?
Yes, but with less weight than a visible stem; main-qi hidden stems weigh more than residual ones.
