Rule: first number → upper trigram, second → lower, sum → moving line; remainder 0 counts as 8 / 6 (Xian Tian numbers). This is one stated convention.

Three steps
How it works
- 01
Pick a method
Number casting or time casting (lunar year, month, day and hour). - 02
Check the remainders
Trigrams use the remainder mod 8, the moving line mod 6; a remainder of 0 counts as 8 or 6. - 03
Weigh Ti and Yong
The trigram without the moving line is Ti, the one with it is Yong; compare their elements.

About the Mei Hua Yi Shu Calculator
Mei Hua Yi Shu (梅花易数, "Plum Blossom Numerology") is an I Ching method traditionally attributed to the Song-dynasty philosopher 邵雍. Instead of coins, it derives a hexagram from numbers — the date and hour, a count of things you observe, or numbers you choose — and reads the five-element relation between two trigrams.
This calculator supports time casting and number casting. It shows every remainder step (modulo eight for the trigrams, modulo six for the moving line), then builds the primary hexagram, the mutual hexagram (互卦) from the inner lines and the changed hexagram (变卦) after the moving line flips. It labels the body (体) and use (用) trigrams and states their relation.
Because every step is shown, the tool doubles as a way to learn the casting arithmetic.
02
How to use it
- Decide on one question.
- Choose time casting or number casting.
- For numbers, enter two numbers (or the counts you observed).
- Review the remainder steps for upper trigram, lower trigram and moving line.
- Read the primary, mutual and changed hexagrams.
- Note which trigram is body and which is use, and their relation.
03
Body and use
The body trigram represents you; the use trigram represents the matter. Use generating body is favourable, body controlling use means the matter can be handled, use controlling body is unfavourable and body generating use means effort or outflow.
04
Process and outcome
The mutual hexagram shows the middle of the process; the changed hexagram shows where it ends. Read their trigrams against the body in the same way.
05
Season
A body trigram whose element is in season is stronger. In spring, for example, 震 and 巽 (wood) are prosperous.
06
Edge cases and empty states
- If a number is zero or missing, the tool asks for a valid positive number.
- Remainder zero is treated as eight (for trigrams) or six (for the moving line), as in the classical rule.
- Time casting uses the lunar date and the hour branch of the moment you cast.
- Printing hides navigation and interactive controls,, so the board and its explanation print cleanly without the menus.
- If JavaScript is disabled, this explanatory text still loads; the interactive board needs JavaScript.
07
Key terms
- TrigramThe eight trigrams — 乾兑离震巽坎艮坤 — are three-line figures associated with heaven, lake, fire, thunder, wind, water, mountain and earth, and with five-element attributes.
- Body and UseIn Mei Hua Yi Shu the trigram without the moving line is the body (体, the asker) and the trigram with it is the use (用, the matter).
- HexagramA hexagram is a figure of six lines, each solid (yang) or broken (yin), built from two trigrams.
- Changing LineA changing (moving) line is an old yang or old yin that flips to its opposite, producing the changed hexagram.
08
Rule set and accuracy
The Mei Hua Yi Shu Calculator uses one fixed rule set, named on this page, so the same input always gives the same result. Traditional methods often have several schools; mixing their rules inside one chart produces boards that no textbook would recognise, which is why only one complete preset is offered.
The engine is tested against worked examples from standard references, and every intermediate value is displayed. If your book shows something different, compare the intermediate values first — the difference is almost always a convention, such as the day boundary or how a leap month or solar-term transition is handled. Calendar data comes from an astronomical library that computes solar terms and lunar months to the minute, so differences of a day or more between sources usually point to a convention rather than an error in the underlying astronomy.

A simple study workflow
Whether you are new to the Mei Hua Yi Shu Calculator or checking work from a class, the same routine helps you learn faster and avoid common errors:
- Record the input exactly: date, time, place and, for divination, the question in one sentence.
- Generate the board and save or print it before interpreting anything.
- Identify the one or two fields that matter most for the question, using the steps above.
- Write a short provisional reading and the reason for it.
- Revisit the notes later and compare with what actually happened, adjusting your understanding of the symbols — not the board.
10
Using the result responsibly
Treat the Mei Hua Yi Shu Calculator as a structured way to think about a question, not as an instruction. Write down the question and the result, and return to them later; many practitioners keep a journal of casts to learn how the symbols behave over time. For decisions involving health, money or law, consult a qualified professional. The tool is free, needs no account, and does not store your question unless you choose to save it.

Practising with Mei Hua Yi Shu Calculator
The fastest way to understand Mei Hua Yi Shu Calculator is to look at real charts rather than memorise rules. Enter a birth date, time and city in the BaZi Calculator, then locate where Mei Hua Yi Shu Calculator appears: in a visible stem, hidden inside a branch, in the current luck pillar or in this year's annual pillar. Note the position, because the year pillar is usually read as background and early life, the month pillar as environment and career setting, the day pillar as the self and close partner, and the hour pillar as later life and output.
- Compare two or three charts where Mei Hua Yi Shu Calculator is prominent and two where it is absent; write down what differs in the overall balance.
- Check the month branch first: seasonal strength changes how much any factor matters.
- Use the hidden-stems and Ten Gods tables in the calculator output instead of guessing.
- Treat single factors as clues, never as verdicts; classical texts always weigh the whole chart.
Different schools describe Mei Hua Yi Shu Calculator with slightly different emphasis. This site follows widely used conventions (solar-term months, true solar time optional, Zi hour setting configurable) and states them openly so you can compare results with a book or another calculator.
