BaZi vs Zi Wei Dou Shu

BaZi (Four Pillars) and Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) are the two best-known Chinese birth-chart systems. Both use the moment of birth, but they build very different charts: BaZi reads eight characters through the five elements, while Zi Wei places over a hundred stars in twelve palaces.

02

How the charts are built

BaZi converts the birth moment into four pillars using the solar-term calendar: the year changes at 立春, months at the twelve jie terms. Every other element of the chart — Ten Gods, hidden stems, luck pillars — is derived arithmetically from those pillars.

Zi Wei Dou Shu converts the birth moment into a lunar month, day and hour, then places the life palace and the fourteen major stars by lookup rules. The resulting chart is a ring of twelve palaces — life, siblings, spouse, children, wealth, health, travel, friends, career, property, fortune and parents.

03

Strengths of each approach

BaZi is compact and arithmetic: once the pillars are right, every practitioner sees the same structure. It is well suited to questions of balance and timing.

Zi Wei Dou Shu is descriptive by area of life: the palace layout makes it easy to ask "what does the chart say about career?" and see a specific set of stars.

04

Which should you learn first?

Many learners start with BaZi because the vocabulary — five elements, stems, branches — is shared with almanacs, Feng Shui and I Ching methods. Others prefer Zi Wei for its visual layout. Using both on the same birth data is a good cross-check of birth-time accuracy.

06

Shared foundations

Most Chinese metaphysical systems share the same building blocks: yin and yang, the five elements, the ten heavenly stems, the twelve earthly branches, the sixty-pair cycle and the solar terms. Learning these once pays off across BaZi, Zi Wei Dou Shu, the almanac and I Ching methods. Differences lie in what each system measures and how it arranges these symbols.

07

A note on neutrality

This page does not rank BaZi above Zi Wei Dou Shu or the reverse. Each tradition has its own internal logic and its own teachers. Accuracy here means applying each system's rules correctly and stating the conventions used — which is what the tools on this site aim to do.

BaZi is a traditional cultural system. This page explains how the symbols are defined and read; it does not make scientific claims or predictions about your health, money or relationships.

Practising with BaZi vs Zi Wei Dou Shu

The fastest way to understand BaZi vs Zi Wei Dou Shu is to look at real charts rather than memorise rules. Enter a birth date, time and city in the BaZi Calculator, then locate where BaZi vs Zi Wei Dou Shu appears: in a visible stem, hidden inside a branch, in the current luck pillar or in this year's annual pillar. Note the position, because the year pillar is usually read as background and early life, the month pillar as environment and career setting, the day pillar as the self and close partner, and the hour pillar as later life and output.

  • Compare two or three charts where BaZi vs Zi Wei Dou Shu is prominent and two where it is absent; write down what differs in the overall balance.
  • Check the month branch first: seasonal strength changes how much any factor matters.
  • Use the hidden-stems and Ten Gods tables in the calculator output instead of guessing.
  • Treat single factors as clues, never as verdicts; classical texts always weigh the whole chart.

Different schools describe BaZi vs Zi Wei Dou Shu with slightly different emphasis. This site follows widely used conventions (solar-term months, true solar time optional, Zi hour setting configurable) and states them openly so you can compare results with a book or another calculator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do BaZi and Zi Wei need the same birth data?
Yes: date, time and place. Zi Wei is more sensitive to the hour because the whole palace layout depends on it.
Can they contradict each other?
They describe the chart in different vocabularies, so direct contradictions are rare but emphasis often differs.
Which is more accurate?
Neither has scientific validation; accuracy here means correctly applying each system's rules.
Can I use BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu together?
Yes. Many practitioners use more than one method, either to cross-check data such as birth time or to look at a question from a different angle. Keep each method's rules separate rather than mixing them.
