丁 Ding Fire Day Master
A 丁 Day Master is yin Fire, traditionally pictured as a candle, lamp or stove fire. This guide shows how a 丁 chart is read: which stems become its Ten Gods, how the seasons change its strength, where it finds roots and what the common misreadings are.
01
What a 丁 Ding Yin Fire Day Master means
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar. When it is 丁 (dīng), the chart is read from the point of view of yin Fire. Traditional texts picture 丁 as a candle, lamp or stove fire. That image is a memory aid for how the element behaves: focused, warm and refined; a small flame that lights a specific place and needs fuel to last.
Every other stem and hidden stem in the chart is then labelled by its relation to 丁: things of the same element are companions, what Fire generates (Earth) is output, what it controls (Metal) is wealth, what controls it (Water) is officer, and what generates it (Wood) is resource. These relations are the Ten Gods.
BaZi is a traditional cultural system. This page explains how the symbols are defined and read; it does not make scientific claims or predictions about your health, money or relationships.
02
How to find it in your chart
- Open the free BaZi calculator and enter your birth date, time and place. Guests can calculate without an account.
- Look at the Day column of the Four Pillars table. The top character is your Day Master; it is highlighted.
- If it shows 丁, everything on this page applies. The Day Master card also states its element and polarity.
- Check the time-boundary warnings: births close to 23:00 or to a solar-term change can switch the day or month pillar.
Charts on this site use the published rule set: true solar time by default, the year changes at 立春 (Start of Spring), months change at the 12 节 solar terms and the day changes at 23:00. Example charts below are computed live by the same engine.

The Ten Gods seen from 丁
For a 丁 Day Master, each of the ten stems always takes the same Ten God role. This table is the quickest way to read a 丁 chart: find a stem anywhere in the pillars (or among the hidden stems) and look up its role.
So for 丁: 壬 Ren and 癸 Gui are the officer stars, 庚 Geng and 辛 Xin are the wealth stars, and 甲 Jia and 乙 Yi are the resource stars.

丁 through the twelve months
The month branch sets the season, and the season is the strongest single factor in judging whether 丁 is strong or weak. Two classical scales are shown: the seasonal state of the element Fire (旺相休囚死) and the twelve growth stages (十二长生) of the stem 丁 itself. In season in summer; in autumn and winter it depends on wood (fuel) to stay alight; strong water or wind (excess metal/water) can put it out.
- 午午 WuFire · Prosperous (旺) · Coming of Age (临官)
Growth stages for yin stems follow the common "yang forward, yin backward" convention; some schools use the yang sequence for both. The calculator does not use growth stages to change any pillar — they are shown here for study.
05
Roots: where 丁 draws support
A stem is "rooted" when a branch in the chart hides a stem of the same element. For 丁, the branches that contain Fire are 寅 Yin, 巳 Si, 午 Wu, 未 Wei, 戌 Xu. A root in the month or day branch usually counts more than one in the year or hour branch, and a main-qi root counts more than a residual one.
Resource roots matter too: branches hiding Wood (寅 Yin, 卯 Mao by main qi) feed 丁 indirectly.
06
Strong or weak 丁, and the useful element
Judging strength combines three questions: is Fire in season (month branch), is 丁 rooted, and how many companions and resource stars stand beside it compared with output, wealth and officer stars. There is no single score; the calculator shows the counts transparently so you can reason about it.
- If 丁 is strong, the classical approach looks for an outlet or a check: Earth (output) to express it, Metal (wealth) to use it, or Water (officer) to discipline it. See Fire strong.
- If 丁 is weak, it looks for support: Wood (resource) to feed it, or more Fire (companions) to share the load. See Fire weak.
- Seasonal adjustment (调候) can override both: In season in summer; in autumn and winter it depends on wood (fuel) to stay alight; strong water or wind (excess metal/water) can put it out.
07
Combination and clash for 丁
丁 combines with 壬 Ren (the pair is associated with Wood). When 壬 appears next to a 丁 Day Master it is the Direct Officer (正官), so the combination is often read as attachment to that theme. Whether it truly "transforms" depends on the month supporting Wood; most of the time it is read as a bond rather than a change of element.
丁 clashes with 癸 Gui — the stem seven positions away with the same polarity, which is also its Seven Killings (七杀). A clash on the stems shows tension that the rest of the chart may or may not resolve.
08
Traditional character themes
Books describe 丁 people with themes such as insight, craftsmanship, quiet persistence, and warn about anxiety, sensitivity to environment. Read these as prompts for reflection, not fixed traits: the month, the other stems and the luck pillars all modify how the Day Master expresses itself.
- A 丁 chart full of Earth tends to be read as expressive and output-driven.
- Much Water highlights structure and pressure around the Day Master.
- Much Wood highlights learning, support and reflection.
- Much Metal highlights management of resources and practical results.
09
Common misreadings
- "Day Master = whole day pillar." No — only the stem 丁 is the Day Master; the branch below it is the day branch.
- "The year stem is my sign." The year pillar matters, but modern BaZi reads the chart from the day stem.
- "丁 is good/bad." No stem is better than another; balance and context decide how a chart is read.
- "My chart changes if I was born at 23:30." It may: under the 23:00 day boundary used here, the day pillar advances at 23:00. Check the boundary warning.
