Fire and Water Day Master Compatibility
How do a Fire and a Water Day Master relate in BaZi? The short answer: Water controls Fire. This page goes stem by stem and explains what a fuller comparison involves.
01
The element relation
Between a Fire Day Master and a Water Day Master the basic relation is: Water controls Fire. A controlling relation is traditionally read as structure or pressure from one side; it can be stabilising when the controlled side is strong, and heavy when it is weak.
| Viewpoint | The other person is |
|---|---|
| Fire Day Master | officer (官杀) |
| Water Day Master | wealth (财) |
02
Stem by stem
Each element has a yang and a yin Day Master, so this pairing covers 4 stem combinations. The Ten God each person represents for the other:
Stem combination: 丁+壬 (→Wood) — traditionally read as attraction or a strong bond between the two Day Masters.
Stem clash: 丙–壬, 丁–癸 — the most direct form of tension between stems.
03
The branch layer
Day branches carry their own elements. Here are the relations between the main Fire branches and the main Water branches — combinations bind, clashes and harms create friction.
Element qualities: Fire brings warmth, visibility, enthusiasm and spreading outward; Water brings flow, storage, wisdom and adaptability. In traditional imagery the pairing is read through how these qualities meet — Water shaping Fire.

Practising with the Fire–Water pairing
The fastest way to understand the Fire–Water pairing is to look at real charts rather than memorise rules. Enter a birth date, time and city in the BaZi Calculator, then locate where the Fire–Water pairing appears: in a visible stem, hidden inside a branch, in the current luck pillar or in this year's annual pillar. Note the position, because the year pillar is usually read as background and early life, the month pillar as environment and career setting, the day pillar as the self and close partner, and the hour pillar as later life and output.
- Compare two or three charts where the Fire–Water pairing is prominent and two where it is absent; write down what differs in the overall balance.
- Check the month branch first: seasonal strength changes how much any factor matters.
- Use the hidden-stems and Ten Gods tables in the calculator output instead of guessing.
- Treat single factors as clues, never as verdicts; classical texts always weigh the whole chart.
- Enter both partners and compare Day Masters, day branches and the useful element of each chart.
Different schools describe the Fire–Water pairing with slightly different emphasis. This site follows widely used conventions (solar-term months, true solar time optional, Zi hour setting configurable) and states them openly so you can compare results with a book or another calculator.

Beyond the Day Masters
Element pairing is only the first layer. A fuller comparison looks at whether each chart supplies what the other lacks, at branch relations between the two day branches (combination, clash, harm), and at which luck pillars both people are in. Two charts of the "same" element pair can therefore read very differently.
- If one chart is short of Water, a Water partner literally brings that element.
- If one chart is already heavy in Fire, another Fire Day Master adds weight to the same side.
- Day-branch clashes and combinations matter as much as stems in traditional compatibility reading.
BaZi is a traditional cultural system. This page explains how the symbols are defined and read; it does not make scientific claims or predictions about your health, money or relationships.

How to compare two charts here
- Calculate the first chart in the BaZi calculator.
- Open Compare with Another Person below the result and enter the second birth data.
- Each chart is computed independently with the same rules; the comparison lists stem and branch relations between them and the Day Master relation in both directions.
- Nothing about the second person is saved or shared unless you choose to.
Charts on this site use the published rule set: true solar time by default, the year changes at 立春 (Start of Spring), months change at the 12 节 solar terms and the day changes at 23:00. Example charts below are computed live by the same engine.
