Ten Gods: Wealth and Officer Stars

Of the Ten Gods, the Wealth and Officer stars are the ones people ask about most, because they are linked to money, work, status and — traditionally — relationships. Their meaning depends heavily on the strength of the Day Master.

Wealth: the element the Day Master controls

  • Direct Wealth (正财, opposite polarity) — steady income, budgeting, practical management, things earned through consistent effort.
  • Indirect Wealth (偏财, same polarity) — opportunity, trade, variable income, generosity, a broader network.

Traditionally, for a male chart Wealth also represents the wife or partner, and Indirect Wealth the father.

Officer: the element that controls the Day Master

  • Direct Officer (正官, opposite polarity) — structure, rules, reputation, responsibility given by an organisation.
  • Seven Killings (七杀, same polarity) — pressure, competition, authority taken rather than given, courage.

Traditionally, for a female chart Officer represents the husband or partner.

Strength changes everything

A strong Day Master can "carry" Wealth and Officer: they become achievements. A weak Day Master facing heavy Wealth may feel stretched — the classic phrase is 财多身弱, rich chart, weak self. Heavy Seven Killings on a weak Day Master is read as pressure that needs Resource (to transform it) or Eating God (to control it).

Key combinations

  • Wealth produces Officer (财生官): effort turns into position.
  • Officer produces Resource (官印相生): authority supports learning and protection, easing pressure on a weak Day Master.
  • Eating God controls Seven Killings (食神制杀): skill and composure tame pressure.
  • Hurting Officer meets Direct Officer (伤官见官): expression clashes with rules; traditionally a warning pattern.

Reading carefully

These are tendencies within one chart, not social predictions. A chart without visible Wealth can still earn well — check hidden stems and luck pillars.

How the four stars are derived

Wealth is the element the Day Master controls; Officer is the element that controls the Day Master. For a 甲 wood Day Master, earth is Wealth (戊 Indirect Wealth, 己 Direct Wealth) and metal is Officer (庚 Seven Killings, 辛 Direct Officer). For a 壬 water Day Master, fire is Wealth (丙 Indirect, 丁 Direct) and earth is Officer (戊 Seven Killings, 己 Direct Officer). Same polarity gives Indirect Wealth and Seven Killings; opposite polarity gives Direct Wealth and Direct Officer. The Ten Gods calculator applies this to every stem and hidden stem.

Direct and Indirect Wealth compared

Direct Wealth 正财Indirect Wealth 偏财
StyleSteady, planned, earnedOpportunistic, variable, networked
Classical themesSalary, savings, diligenceTrade, windfalls, generosity
In a strong chartReliable resourcesWide opportunities
In a weak chartBurden of responsibilityScattered effort

Wealth in the month branch is traditionally read as a career environment linked with resources or management. Wealth in the hour pillar is often linked with later-life resources or projects.

Direct Officer and Seven Killings compared

Direct Officer 正官Seven Killings 七杀
StyleOrderly, rule-basedForceful, competitive
Classical themesReputation, position, disciplinePressure, authority, courage
Ideal companionResource and WealthEating God (control) or Resource (transform)
Classical concernHurting Officer damaging itUncontrolled pressure on a weak Day Master

Classical texts warn against mixing Direct Officer and Seven Killings (官杀混杂) without a way to separate them, because the chart then has two sources of control pulling in different directions.

Reading Wealth and Officer together

The chain Wealth → Officer → Resource → Day Master is one of the most important flows in BaZi. Wealth produces Officer; Officer produces Resource; Resource supports the Day Master. When all links are present and balanced, the chart is said to flow well. When one link is missing — for example strong Wealth and Officer but no Resource for a weak Day Master — the reader looks for that missing element in luck pillars. This is one reason the useful element is chosen by looking at the whole chain rather than at one star.

Wealth and Officer over time

A Wealth luck pillar emphasises resources and effort; an Officer luck pillar emphasises responsibility and structure. For a strong Day Master these decades often feel productive; for a weak one they can feel demanding unless Resource or Companions are also present. The luck pillar calculator and annual pillar calculator show when these elements arrive.

A worked example

Take a 丙 fire Day Master born in a 子 month. 子 holds 癸 water, which for 丙 is Direct Officer. Fire is out of season in winter, so the Day Master tends to be weak, and the Officer is strong. If 甲 or 乙 wood appears, Officer produces Resource and Resource supports fire — a balanced chain. Without wood, the reader expects the chart to welcome wood and fire luck pillars, and to find heavy water years demanding.

Common misreadings

  1. "No Wealth star means no money." Hidden stems and luck pillars often supply Wealth.
  2. "Seven Killings is dangerous." It is forceful; with control or transformation it is highly valued.
  3. Reading social status directly from Officer. Modern lives rarely map onto classical official ranks.
  4. Forgetting gender conventions are traditional. Treat spouse-star rules as one convention.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chart have too much Wealth? Yes; 财多身弱 describes Wealth overwhelming a weak Day Master.

What makes Seven Killings favourable? Control by Eating God or transformation by Resource, with adequate Day Master strength.

Is Direct Officer always good? It is valued, but it needs a Day Master strong enough to carry it.

A quick self-check

With your chart from the Ten Gods calculator:

  1. Mark every Wealth and Officer star, visible and hidden.
  2. Note whether Direct Officer and Seven Killings both appear.
  3. Check for Resource (to transform Officer) and Eating God (to control Seven Killings).
  4. Decide whether your Day Master can carry what you found.

The answers tell you whether Wealth and Officer are likely to act as achievements or as burdens in your chart, and which elements you would look for in luck pillars.

Position matters

Wealth and Officer read differently by pillar position. Officer in the month is the classic "Officer structure", shaping the whole chart around order and responsibility. Officer in the hour is often read as responsibility growing later in life. Wealth in the day branch places resources in the spouse palace; Wealth in the year links to family background. Always state the position when describing a Ten God.

Key points

  • Wealth is the element the Day Master controls. Officer is the element that controls the Day Master.
  • Direct Wealth suggests steady, earned resources. Indirect Wealth suggests opportunity and a wider network.
  • Direct Officer suggests order and reputation. Seven Killings suggests pressure, competition and courage.
  • A strong Day Master can carry Wealth and Officer. A weak one may feel burdened by them (财多身弱).
  • Classic patterns: Wealth produces Officer, Officer produces Resource, Eating God controls Seven Killings, and the warning pattern 伤官见官.
  • Mixing Direct Officer and Seven Killings without separation is a classical concern.
  • Position matters. Officer in the month shapes the whole chart, while Officer in the hour grows later in life.
  • Hidden stems and luck pillars often supply stars that are not visible.

Key terms in this article

Ten Gods · 十神
The Ten Gods name each stem by its element relation and polarity relative to the Day Master: Friend and Rob Wealth (same element), Eating God and Hurting Officer (output), Direct and Indirect Wealth, Direct Officer and Seven Killings, Direct and Indirect Resource.
Day Master · 日主
The Day Master (日主 or 日元) is the heavenly stem of the day pillar. It represents the self in the chart, and every other stem is named relative to it as one of the Ten Gods. Its strength, judged mainly from the month branch and roots, is the starting point of nearly every reading.
Strong Day Master · 身强
A strong Day Master is supported by the season, has roots and is backed by companion or resource stems. Traditionally it handles pressure well and benefits from output, wealth and officer elements that use or channel its energy.
Weak Day Master · 身弱
A weak Day Master is out of season, has few roots and is surrounded by elements that drain or control it. Traditionally it benefits from resource and companion elements, and from periods that bring them.

Next: Output and Resource stars.
