Ten Gods: Output and Resource Stars

The Output and Resource stars form a natural pair: one is what the Day Master gives out, the other what it takes in. Reading them together shows how a chart balances expression with support.

Output: the element the Day Master produces

  • Eating God (食神, same polarity) — easy expression, enjoyment, craft, a calm and generous style.
  • Hurting Officer (伤官, opposite polarity) — sharp expression, originality, performance, impatience with rules.

Output drains the Day Master. For a strong Day Master this is healthy release; for a weak one it can be exhausting.

Resource: the element that produces the Day Master

  • Direct Resource (正印, opposite polarity) — learning, credentials, protection, care.
  • Indirect Resource (偏印, same polarity) — unconventional study, intuition, specialised or solitary knowledge.

Resource strengthens the Day Master. For a weak chart it is often the useful element; for an already strong one, too much Resource can feel like inertia.

How they interact

Resource controls Output (印克食伤). Two classic patterns:

  • Indirect Resource seizes Eating God (枭神夺食): heavy 偏印 suppresses 食神 — traditionally read as blocked enjoyment or interrupted projects.
  • Hurting Officer with Resource (伤官配印): Resource restrains the sharpness of Hurting Officer, turning talent into disciplined skill.

Output also controls Officer: Eating God controls Seven Killings is one of the most admired patterns.

Practical reading

Ask: what does this chart do with its energy (Output), and where does it recover (Resource)? A chart full of Output but no Resource may produce a lot and burn out; full of Resource but no Output may know much and share little.

How the four stars are derived

Output is the element the Day Master produces; Resource is the element that produces the Day Master. For a 甲 wood Day Master, fire is Output (丙 Eating God, 丁 Hurting Officer) and water is Resource (壬 Indirect Resource, 癸 Direct Resource). For a 庚 metal Day Master, water is Output (壬 Eating God, 癸 Hurting Officer) and earth is Resource (戊 Indirect Resource, 己 Direct Resource). Same polarity gives Eating God and Indirect Resource; opposite polarity gives Hurting Officer and Direct Resource. The Ten Gods calculator labels every stem and hidden stem automatically.

Eating God in more depth

Eating God (食神) is often called the gentlest of the Ten Gods. It drains the Day Master smoothly, produces Wealth, and controls Seven Killings. Traditional descriptions include enjoyment of food and comfort, an easy teaching or creative style, and generosity. In a strong chart it is one of the most favoured stars, because it turns surplus energy into output without conflict. In a weak chart, too much Eating God is read as spreading oneself thin.

Hurting Officer in more depth

Hurting Officer (伤官) is sharper. It controls Direct Officer — hence its name — and is associated with brilliance, critique, performance, originality and impatience with hierarchy. Classical texts are wary of it when Direct Officer is also prominent, the pattern called 伤官见官. Modern readers often frame strong Hurting Officer as talent that needs an outlet: freelance work, performance, writing, research or any setting where independent judgement is valued. When Hurting Officer produces Wealth (伤官生财), the talent has a practical channel.

Direct and Indirect Resource in more depth

Direct Resource (正印) is associated with formal learning, credentials, mentors, care and protection. It is the classic remedy for a weak Day Master under pressure from Officer: Officer produces Resource, Resource produces the Day Master, and the pressure becomes support.

Indirect Resource (偏印, also called 枭神) is associated with specialised or unconventional knowledge — technical fields, metaphysics, research, intuition — and with a more solitary style of learning. Its classical concern is that it controls Eating God. When Eating God is useful and Indirect Resource is heavy, the chart is said to have its "food seized".

Balancing Output and Resource

Chart conditionWhat practitioners look for
Strong Day Master, little OutputOutput as the useful element, to release energy
Weak Day Master, heavy OutputResource to restore energy and restrain Output
Heavy Resource, strong Day MasterWealth to control Resource (财破印)
Hurting Officer and Direct Officer clashResource to mediate, or Wealth to connect them
Seven Killings pressure, weak Day MasterResource to transform it, or Eating God to control it

These remedies are the core of the useful element method. They show why Output and Resource are rarely read alone.

Output and Resource over time

Luck pillars that bring Output emphasise expression and production; those that bring Resource emphasise learning, support and recovery. A weak Day Master moving into a Resource luck pillar often reports more stability; a strong Day Master moving into an Output luck pillar often reports more productivity. Use the luck pillar calculator to see which decades bring which elements.

Common misreadings

  1. "Hurting Officer is bad." It is a strong star with a traditional warning in one specific combination.
  2. "Resource means a good education." It describes the support and learning dynamic in a chart, not credentials.
  3. Forgetting hidden stems. A chart with no visible Resource may have Resource in the month branch.
  4. Reading one star without its controller. Check Resource whenever you read Output, and vice versa.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Eating God or Hurting Officer? Neither in general; it depends on strength and what else is present.

Can Resource be unfavourable? Yes. For a strong Day Master, heavy Resource adds to the excess.

What is 伤官配印? Hurting Officer paired with Resource: talent made disciplined by learning.

A quick self-check

Use these questions with your own chart from the Ten Gods calculator:

  1. Count Output stars (visible and main-qi hidden) and Resource stars.
  2. Which is stronger in the month branch?
  3. Is there a Hurting Officer next to a Direct Officer, or an Indirect Resource next to an Eating God?
  4. Is your Day Master strong or weak — and therefore, which side does it need more?

If Output dominates in a weak chart, Resource is usually the remedy. If Resource dominates in a strong chart, Wealth or Output usually helps. Writing the answers down makes the balance visible at a glance and prepares you for reading luck pillars, where these elements arrive and depart decade by decade.

Position matters

Output in the month often colours the whole chart's style — an Eating God structure is relaxed and productive; a Hurting Officer structure is sharp and expressive. Resource in the month or day branch gives the Day Master a strong source of support close at hand; Resource only in the year is more distant. In the hour, Output is traditionally linked to children and creative legacy. Read each star with its pillar position.

Key points

  • Output (Eating God, Hurting Officer) is what the Day Master produces. Resource (Direct and Indirect Resource) is what produces the Day Master.
  • Eating God is gentle and productive. Hurting Officer is sharp, original and impatient with rules.
  • Direct Resource suggests learning and protection. Indirect Resource suggests specialised or unconventional knowledge.
  • Resource controls Output. Watch for 枭神夺食, and value 伤官配印.
  • Output controls Officer. 食神制杀 is one of the most admired patterns.
  • Strong charts usually welcome Output. Weak charts usually welcome Resource.
  • Read Output and Resource together, and always note their pillar positions.

Key terms in this article

Ten Gods · 十神
The Ten Gods name each stem by its element relation and polarity relative to the Day Master: Friend and Rob Wealth (same element), Eating God and Hurting Officer (output), Direct and Indirect Wealth, Direct Officer and Seven Killings, Direct and Indirect Resource.
Useful Element · 用神
The useful element (用神) is the element that best brings the chart toward balance or serves its structure. Schools differ: some choose by strength (support the weak, drain the strong), others by climate (warm a cold chart) or by structure. It is a conclusion of analysis, not something read off one pillar.
Chart Structure · 格局
Chart structure (格局) classifies a chart mainly by the Ten God of the month branch's main qi, e.g. Direct Officer structure or Eating God structure. Classical texts such as 子平真诠 build their analysis around it.
