Luck Pillars and Annual Pillars

How BaZi luck pillars are arranged, how the starting age is calculated from solar terms, why annual pillars begin at Li Chun, and how to read both against your chart.

Luck Pillars and Annual Pillars

A natal chart describes a fixed structure. Luck pillars (大运) and annual pillars (流年) describe how that structure meets time. Luck pillars change every ten years; annual pillars change every year at 立春. Together they are the timing layer of BaZi.

Where luck pillars come from

Luck pillars are derived from the month pillar. Starting from it, you step forward or backward through the sixty-pillar cycle, one step per decade. If your month pillar is 辛巳 and your luck runs forward, the luck pillars are 壬午, 癸未, 甲申, 乙酉 and so on; if it runs backward, 庚辰, 己卯, 戊寅…

Why the month? The month pillar represents the season and environment you were born into. Luck pillars describe how that environment evolves as you move through life.

Direction: forward or backward

The direction follows a fixed classical rule based on the polarity of the year stem and the gender option:

Year stemMaleFemale
Yang (甲丙戊庚壬)forwardbackward
Yin (乙丁己辛癸)backwardforward

The year stem is taken after the 立春 boundary. This calculator exposes gender as a plain option used only for this rule. See luck direction.

Starting age

Luck pillars do not start at birth. The starting age (起运) is computed from the distance between the birth moment and the neighbouring jie solar term — the next one if luck runs forward, the previous one if backward — converted at:

  • 3 days = 1 year
  • 1 day = 4 months
  • 2 hours = 10 days

For example, if the next jie term is 13 days and 6 hours after birth, the starting age is 4 years, 4 months and 30 days — about 4 years 5 months. Older tables often round to whole years; this calculator shows the exact years, months and days and the transition date. See starting age.

The solar-term instants used are exact to the minute. For reference, here are the twelve jie terms that start the BaZi months in 2026:

Annual pillars

The annual pillar is simply the stem-branch of the year, but in BaZi the year begins at the exact moment of 立春, not on 1 January and not at Chinese New Year. A date in mid-January 2026 still belongs to the 乙巳 year; the 丙午 year begins on 4 February 2026.

Reading a luck pillar

A repeatable sequence makes luck pillars much easier to read:

  1. Name its Ten Gods. The stem and the main hidden stem of the branch are Ten Gods relative to your Day Master.
  2. Compare with the useful element. Does the period bring the element the chart needs, or more of what it already has too much of?
  3. Check interactions. Does the branch combine with or clash the natal day or month branch? Does the stem combine with a natal stem?
  4. Check revelations. Does the stem reveal a hidden stem in the natal chart, making it active?
  5. Note the transition. The year a new luck pillar begins is traditionally a time of adjustment.

A common convention reads the stem as more influential in the first five years of a decade and the branch in the last five. Others read the pair together throughout. Choose one convention and keep it consistent. See how to read a luck pillar.

Reading an annual pillar

Annual pillars are read in two layers: against the natal chart and against the current luck pillar. A year that clashes the natal day branch is traditionally associated with change in personal circumstances; a year that combines it with steadiness or new ties. When the annual pillar is identical to the luck pillar (岁运并临), the theme of that decade is doubled for a year. When an annual pillar repeats or fully clashes the day pillar (伏吟, 反吟), it deserves a closer look. See reading annual pillars.

Example: 18 May 1990, 09:30, Shanghai. Below the pillars the calculator lists direction, exact starting age and every ten-year luck pillar.

Look at the first three luck pillars in the example and apply the five steps above. Notice how the element of each period differs from the month pillar it started from, and how the Ten Gods change from decade to decade.

Common mistakes

  • Rounding the starting age and then comparing exact dates. Use exact values consistently.
  • Changing the annual pillar on 1 January. BaZi years start at 立春.
  • Reading luck pillars without the natal chart. A luck pillar has no meaning on its own; it is always relative to the Day Master and the useful element.
  • Treating a "bad" period as a bad decade. It means the period brings less of what the chart needs. Annual pillars and the natal chart still shape each year.

Key points

  • Luck pillars are ten-year periods derived from the month pillar, moving forward or backward.
  • Direction depends on the polarity of the year stem and the traditional gender rule.
  • The starting age comes from the time between birth and the nearest jie, with three days counted as one year.
  • Read each pillar's stem and branch separately, then together, against the useful element.
  • Check how each luck branch relates to the natal month and day branches.
  • Lay out the whole sequence to see patterns, rather than overreacting to one decade.
  • Annual pillars are read inside the luck pillar that contains them.

Key terms in this article

Luck Pillars · 大运
Luck pillars are ten-year pillars that step forward or backward through the sixty cycle from the month pillar. They are the main timing layer of BaZi, read for how each period's elements interact with the natal chart.
Starting Age · 起运
The starting age is when the first luck pillar begins. It is computed from the time between birth and the neighbouring 节 solar term, converted at three days per year, one day per four months and two hours per ten days.
Annual Pillar · 流年
The annual pillar is the stem-branch of a calendar year, changing at 立春. It is read against both the natal chart and the current luck pillar; a year that repeats the luck pillar exactly (岁运并临) is watched closely.
Luck Direction · 大运顺逆
Luck pillars run forward for yang-year males and yin-year females, and backward for yin-year males and yang-year females. The year stem polarity is taken after the 立春 boundary.

How to read a whole sequence

Rather than reading one luck pillar at a time, lay out the full sequence of eight or nine pillars and mark each with three notes: the Ten God of its stem, the Ten God of its branch's main qi, and whether that element is useful, neutral or unfavourable for the chart. Patterns appear quickly. Many charts have a run of two or three supportive pillars followed by a more demanding stretch, or the reverse. Seeing the sequence helps you avoid overreacting to a single decade.

Pay attention to the moments when luck pillars change. Traditionally the last year or two of one pillar and the first year of the next are described as a transition, when the old influence fades and the new one is not yet settled. Many people find it useful to plan larger commitments with this rhythm in mind.

Stem and branch halves

Some practitioners give the stem more weight in the first five years of a luck pillar and the branch more weight in the last five. Others treat the pillar as a whole but note that the branch, being the root, has the more lasting effect. Either way, read the two halves separately before combining them: a pillar whose stem is useful and whose branch is unfavourable will usually be mixed, not simply good.

Luck pillars and the natal chart

A luck pillar never acts alone. Check whether its branch clashes or combines the natal month or day branch, whether its stem combines the Day Master, and whether it fills a missing element. A luck pillar that completes a three-harmony group with two natal branches can transform the chart's balance for a decade. Use the luck pillar calculator to list the sequence for any birth time, then apply this checklist pillar by pillar.

Frequently asked questions

Why does gender matter? Only for direction, under the classical rule. The calculator does not use it for anything else.

My book gives a different starting age. Most differences come from rounding or counting days by date instead of the exact solar-term instant.

Does the hour affect the starting age? Slightly: a few hours shift the start by weeks. Only births close to a solar term see larger changes.
