Element strength

Earth Weak Day Master

A weak Earth Day Master is one of the most common questions in BaZi. This page explains the signs to check, the classical useful-element reasoning and the caveats.

01

What "Earth weak" means

This page is about a chart whose Day Master is Earth (戊 Wu Yang Earth or 己 Ji Yin Earth) and is judged weak. "Weak" means pressure outweighs support: the Day Master is out of season or lightly rooted, and output, wealth and officer stars dominate.

Strength is a judgement, not a measurement. Different schools weigh season, roots and stems differently; this site shows the inputs transparently instead of printing a single score.

02

Signs to check in your chart

FactorPoints toward weak
Month branch子 Zi 寅 Yin 卯 Mao 亥 Hai — Earth confined or dead
Rootsno Earth in any branch, or only residual qi
Visible stemsstems of Metal, Water, Wood surround the Day Master
Clashesthe only root is clashed

03

Useful element reasoning

For a weak Earth Day Master, the support/restrain method looks for Fire and Earth: resource (Fire) feeds it, companions (Earth) share the load. Extra Metal, Water, Wood is usually considered a burden.

Seasonal adjustment (调候) can take priority: Strong in the four transitional months (辰戌丑未) and supported by fire in summer; in winter it can freeze and benefits from warmth; in spring it is loosened by wood. In the transitional months it is in season; in summer it dries and likes water; in winter it is damp-cold and likes fire.

There are also "follow" (从格) structures: when Earth is extremely weak with no support at all, some schools stop opposing the trend and follow it instead. These are rare and need care.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Confirm the Day Master is 戊 or 己 in the calculator.
  2. Read the month branch. In 丑, 辰, 巳, 午, 未, 戌 months Earth is prosperous or strengthening; in 子, 寅, 卯, 亥 months it is confined or dead.
  3. List the roots: which branches hide Earth (or Fire as resource) and in what position.
  4. Count visible helpers (Fire, Earth) against visible drains (Metal, Water, Wood) among the three other stems.
  5. Look for combinations or clashes that add or remove support (a clashed root counts less).
  6. Conclude "weak" only if most factors agree; mixed signals usually mean a balanced or moderately weak chart.

Practising with a weak Earth Day Master

The fastest way to understand a weak Earth Day Master is to look at real charts rather than memorise rules. Enter a birth date, time and city in the BaZi Calculator, then locate where a weak Earth Day Master appears: in a visible stem, hidden inside a branch, in the current luck pillar or in this year's annual pillar. Note the position, because the year pillar is usually read as background and early life, the month pillar as environment and career setting, the day pillar as the self and close partner, and the hour pillar as later life and output.

  • Compare two or three charts where a weak Earth Day Master is prominent and two where it is absent; write down what differs in the overall balance.
  • Check the month branch first: seasonal strength changes how much any factor matters.
  • Use the hidden-stems and Ten Gods tables in the calculator output instead of guessing.
  • Treat single factors as clues, never as verdicts; classical texts always weigh the whole chart.

Different schools describe a weak Earth Day Master with slightly different emphasis. This site follows widely used conventions (solar-term months, true solar time optional, Zi hour setting configurable) and states them openly so you can compare results with a book or another calculator.

06

Luck and annual pillars

Luck pillars bring ten-year doses of elements. For a weak Earth chart, periods dominated by Fire or Earth are traditionally read as more balancing, and periods dominated by Metal or Water or Wood as less so. The calculator lists every luck pillar with its Ten God so you can trace this.

  • 甲 Jia periods: Wood → adds to the imbalance
  • 乙 Yi periods: Wood → adds to the imbalance
  • 丙 Bing periods: Fire → balancing
  • 丁 Ding periods: Fire → balancing
  • 戊 Wu periods: Earth → balancing
  • 己 Ji periods: Earth → balancing
  • 庚 Geng periods: Metal → adds to the imbalance
  • 辛 Xin periods: Metal → adds to the imbalance
  • 壬 Ren periods: Water → adds to the imbalance
  • 癸 Gui periods: Water → adds to the imbalance

Charts on this site use the published rule set: true solar time by default, the year changes at 立春 (Start of Spring), months change at the 12 节 solar terms and the day changes at 23:00. Example charts below are computed live by the same engine.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Earth Day Master is weak?
Check season (month branch), roots and the balance of supporting vs draining stems. The calculator shows all three.
Is strong better than weak?
No. Both describe imbalance; what matters is which elements bring balance.
Can the useful element change?
The natal useful element is fixed by the chart, but luck pillars change which elements are present in each period.
Does the calculator tell me my useful element?
It shows the facts (season, roots, counts) but does not print a single useful element, because schools disagree.
