How to Find Your Day Master

Your Day Master is the single most important symbol in a BaZi chart. This guide shows how to find it, how to make sure it is correct and what to read next.

01

Step by step

The day pillar comes from an unbroken sixty-day cycle, so you only need the birth date — and the time if it was close to 23:00.

  1. Open the calculator and enter your date of birth.
  2. Add time and city if known; they matter for births near 23:00.
  3. Find the day column and its upper character — the day stem.
  4. Note its element and polarity: 甲 yang wood, 乙 yin wood, and so on.
  5. Open the matching Day Master guide.

02

Checking the day boundary

If you were born between 23:00 and 00:00, your Day Master depends on the Zi-hour convention. Calculate with both settings and compare. With true solar time on, the relevant time is the corrected one.

03

The ten Day Masters at a glance

甲 and 乙 are wood, 丙 and 丁 fire, 戊 and 己 earth, 庚 and 辛 metal, 壬 and 癸 water. Classical imagery pairs each with a picture — 甲 as a tall tree, 乙 as a vine, 丙 as the sun, 丁 as a lamp, 戊 as a mountain, 己 as field soil, 庚 as raw metal, 辛 as jewellery, 壬 as a river, 癸 as rain. These images are teaching aids for how each stem relates to the others.

04

What to read next

After the Day Master, look at the month branch for season, then at roots in the branches. Together they tell you whether the Day Master is strong or weak, which shapes every Ten God reading.

Practising with find your day master

The fastest way to understand find your day master is to look at real charts rather than memorise rules. Enter a birth date, time and city in the BaZi Calculator, then locate where find your day master appears: in a visible stem, hidden inside a branch, in the current luck pillar or in this year's annual pillar. Note the position, because the year pillar is usually read as background and early life, the month pillar as environment and career setting, the day pillar as the self and close partner, and the hour pillar as later life and output.

  • Compare two or three charts where find your day master is prominent and two where it is absent; write down what differs in the overall balance.
  • Check the month branch first: seasonal strength changes how much any factor matters.
  • Use the hidden-stems and Ten Gods tables in the calculator output instead of guessing.
  • Treat single factors as clues, never as verdicts; classical texts always weigh the whole chart.

Different schools describe find your day master with slightly different emphasis. This site follows widely used conventions (solar-term months, true solar time optional, Zi hour setting configurable) and states them openly so you can compare results with a book or another calculator.

A suggested study path

How to Find Your Day Master is one piece of a larger system. If you are learning BaZi from scratch, the order below builds each idea on the previous one, and every step links to free reference pages on this site.

  1. Calculate a chart and confirm the four pillars are correct (checklist).
  2. Learn the ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches.
  3. Find your Day Master and judge its strength with the five elements.
  4. Read the Ten Gods in context.
  5. Move on to timing with luck and annual pillars.
  6. Use the glossary whenever a term is unfamiliar.

09

Before you draw conclusions

BaZi rewards patience. Most errors in reading come not from the advanced techniques but from skipping basic checks. Before you write down a conclusion from this guide, run through these questions:

  • Are all four pillars correct under the conventions you follow?
  • Have you read the month branch before anything else?
  • Have you looked at hidden stems as well as visible ones?
  • Does your conclusion rely on one factor or several that agree?
  • Have you avoided fitting the chart to events after the fact?

Classical authors such as those of 滴天髓 and 子平真诠 repeatedly warn against single-factor readings. The habit of checking the whole chart is the most valuable skill a learner can build.

BaZi is a traditional cultural system. This page explains how the symbols are defined and read; it does not make scientific claims or predictions about your health, money or relationships.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Day Master the same as my birth animal?
No. The popular birth-year label comes from the year branch; the Day Master is the day stem.
Can my Day Master change over life?
No. It is fixed at birth; luck and annual pillars change around it.
Do I need to memorise all the tables?
No. The calculator applies the tables for you. Understanding why each rule exists matters more than memorising it, and the glossary is always one click away.
Which book should I read alongside this guide?
Classical texts such as 滴天髓, 子平真诠 and 穷通宝鉴 are the usual references; modern annotated editions make them more approachable.
Can I practise on famous people's charts?
You can, but published birth times are often uncertain. Charts of people you know, with documented times, are better practice material.
