Yin and Yang — 阴阳 yīn yáng
Definition
Each element has a yang and a yin form. Yang stems are 甲丙戊庚壬, yin stems 乙丁己辛癸; branches alternate in the same way starting with 子 as yang. Polarity decides, for example, whether a relation is Direct or Seven Killings, and the direction of luck pillars.

02
Context: elements and strength
Element analysis asks two questions: which elements are present, and how strong the Day Master is relative to them. Counting characters answers the first only roughly, because a month branch in season outweighs a distant stem out of season. Classical practice therefore weights the month command first, then roots in the branches, then visible helpers and opponents.
Strength is a means, not an end. Once balance is judged, the useful element is chosen to correct it, and luck pillars are read for whether they bring that element. Different schools — strength-based (扶抑), climate-based (调候) and structure-based (格局) — can choose different useful elements for the same chart, which is why this site shows its inputs instead of a single verdict.
Seasonal strength, growth stages and roots are three lenses on the same question. They usually agree; when they do not, the month command takes precedence in most classical texts.
03
Common mistakes
- Treating a "missing" element as automatically needed.
- Counting characters without weighting the season.
- Ignoring hidden-stem roots.
- Changing the useful element after the fact to fit events.
Five-phase theory long predates BaZi. Strength and useful-element methods are developed in classics such as 滴天髓 and 穷通宝鉴, which still anchor most modern teaching.

Practising with Yin and Yang
The fastest way to understand Yin and Yang is to look at real charts rather than memorise rules. Enter a birth date, time and city in the BaZi Calculator, then locate where Yin and Yang appears: in a visible stem, hidden inside a branch, in the current luck pillar or in this year's annual pillar. Note the position, because the year pillar is usually read as background and early life, the month pillar as environment and career setting, the day pillar as the self and close partner, and the hour pillar as later life and output.
- Compare two or three charts where Yin and Yang is prominent and two where it is absent; write down what differs in the overall balance.
- Check the month branch first: seasonal strength changes how much any factor matters.
- Use the hidden-stems and Ten Gods tables in the calculator output instead of guessing.
- Treat single factors as clues, never as verdicts; classical texts always weigh the whole chart.
Different schools describe Yin and Yang with slightly different emphasis. This site follows widely used conventions (solar-term months, true solar time optional, Zi hour setting configurable) and states them openly so you can compare results with a book or another calculator.

A suggested study path
Yin and Yang is one piece of a larger system. If you are learning BaZi from scratch, the order below builds each idea on the previous one, and every step links to free reference pages on this site.
- Calculate a chart and confirm the four pillars are correct (checklist).
- Learn the ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches.
- Find your Day Master and judge its strength with the five elements.
- Read the Ten Gods in context.
- Move on to timing with luck and annual pillars.
- Use the glossary whenever a term is unfamiliar.
