Follower Chart — 从格 cóng gé

Definition

A follower chart is a special structure in which the Day Master is so weak and rootless that it "follows" the dominant element instead of resisting it. The usual strength logic then reverses. Most schools require strict conditions, and the label is easily over-applied.

Be cautious: a single hidden root usually rules out a true follower chart.

02

Context: elements and strength

Element analysis asks two questions: which elements are present, and how strong the Day Master is relative to them. Counting characters answers the first only roughly, because a month branch in season outweighs a distant stem out of season. Classical practice therefore weights the month command first, then roots in the branches, then visible helpers and opponents.

Strength is a means, not an end. Once balance is judged, the useful element is chosen to correct it, and luck pillars are read for whether they bring that element. Different schools — strength-based (扶抑), climate-based (调候) and structure-based (格局) — can choose different useful elements for the same chart, which is why this site shows its inputs instead of a single verdict.

Seasonal strength, growth stages and roots are three lenses on the same question. They usually agree; when they do not, the month command takes precedence in most classical texts.

03

Common mistakes

  • Treating a "missing" element as automatically needed.
  • Counting characters without weighting the season.
  • Ignoring hidden-stem roots.
  • Changing the useful element after the fact to fit events.

Five-phase theory long predates BaZi. Strength and useful-element methods are developed in classics such as 滴天髓 and 穷通宝鉴, which still anchor most modern teaching.

Practising with Follower Chart

The fastest way to understand Follower Chart is to look at real charts rather than memorise rules. Enter a birth date, time and city in the BaZi Calculator, then locate where Follower Chart appears: in a visible stem, hidden inside a branch, in the current luck pillar or in this year's annual pillar. Note the position, because the year pillar is usually read as background and early life, the month pillar as environment and career setting, the day pillar as the self and close partner, and the hour pillar as later life and output.

  • Compare two or three charts where Follower Chart is prominent and two where it is absent; write down what differs in the overall balance.
  • Check the month branch first: seasonal strength changes how much any factor matters.
  • Use the hidden-stems and Ten Gods tables in the calculator output instead of guessing.
  • Treat single factors as clues, never as verdicts; classical texts always weigh the whole chart.

Different schools describe Follower Chart with slightly different emphasis. This site follows widely used conventions (solar-term months, true solar time optional, Zi hour setting configurable) and states them openly so you can compare results with a book or another calculator.

A suggested study path

Follower Chart is one piece of a larger system. If you are learning BaZi from scratch, the order below builds each idea on the previous one, and every step links to free reference pages on this site.

  1. Calculate a chart and confirm the four pillars are correct (checklist).
  2. Learn the ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches.
  3. Find your Day Master and judge its strength with the five elements.
  4. Read the Ten Gods in context.
  5. Move on to timing with luck and annual pillars.
  6. Use the glossary whenever a term is unfamiliar.

Scope

BaZi is a traditional cultural system. This page explains how the symbols are defined and read; it does not make scientific claims or predictions about your health, money or relationships.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does Follower Chart mean in BaZi?
A follower chart is a special structure in which the Day Master is so weak and rootless that it "follows" the dominant element instead of resisting it.
Where do I find Follower Chart in my chart?
Be cautious: a single hidden root usually rules out a true follower chart.
Is Follower Chart the same in every school?
The definitions are shared, but weighting differs. Strength-based, climate-based and structure-based schools apply them differently.
Do I need Follower Chart to read a chart?
For any reading beyond basic symbols, yes — strength frames how every Ten God is interpreted.
Can Follower Chart be calculated automatically?
The mechanical part — which characters, which relations, which dates — is fully rule-based, and this site's tools compute it for you. Interpretation, that is weighing Follower Chart against the rest of the chart, remains a human judgement.
Where can I learn more about Follower Chart?
Follow the related terms above, read the learning guides, and study the classical sources mentioned on this page alongside a calculated chart.
