BaZi Without a Birth Time: What You Can Still Read

What a three-pillar BaZi chart still tells you when the birth time is unknown, how hour candidates work, and honest ways to narrow down the hour.

BaZi Without a Birth Time: What You Can Still Read

Many people do not know their birth time. Records were lost, never made, or rounded to "morning". The good news is that a BaZi chart without the hour pillar is still a meaningful chart: three of the four pillars, including the Day Master and the month command, are normally fixed for the whole day.

What stays the same all day

For a typical date:

  • The year pillar is fixed unless the date is 立春.
  • The month pillar is fixed unless the date is a jie solar term.
  • The day pillar — and therefore the Day Master — is fixed except for the window around the day boundary at 23:00 (or midnight).

That leaves six of the eight characters known with certainty. You can identify the Day Master, read the season, find roots in three branches, name the Ten Gods of three stems, and calculate luck pillars (the starting age shifts only by days or weeks across a day).

What you lose

The hour pillar contributes one stem and one branch:

  • One more stem, which may be a helper or a drain for the Day Master.
  • One more branch with its hidden stems — a possible root.
  • In classical reading, the themes of later life and children.

For most charts, the missing hour changes the strength judgement only at the margin. When the chart is finely balanced, the hour can tip it.

Using a time range

If you know anything at all — "before breakfast", "in the evening", "around 3 or 4 pm" — enter it as a range. A range of two to six hours narrows the hour pillar to one to three candidates. The calculator lists the candidate hour pillars and marks which pillars are stable across the range.

Ways to narrow the hour honestly

  • Ask relatives and check documents: hospital bracelets, baby books, letters, birth announcements.
  • Look for indirect clues: shift changes, meal times, a sunrise or sunset someone remembers.
  • Check official records where available.

What to avoid

The popular technique of "rectifying" the hour by choosing the candidate that best matches known life events is risky. With twelve candidates and a flexible reading, almost any candidate can be made to fit hindsight. If you use it, write down your predictions for each candidate before comparing with events, and treat the result as provisional.

Example: 20 August 1995. With an unknown time, the year, month and day pillars shown here would be the same for any hour of the day (the day being away from a solar term and the 23:00 boundary).

How much does the hour change?

The hour pillar is one of four pillars, but its influence on a reading depends on the chart. It matters most when:

  • The Day Master's strength is borderline and the hour branch could add or remove a root.
  • The hour branch would complete or break a combination with the day branch.
  • A question concerns later life, children or long-term projects, traditionally linked to the hour.
  • The luck pillar starting age is needed precisely, since it is computed from the birth moment to the nearest jie solar term.

It matters least for broad questions about personality and season, which come mainly from the Day Master and month branch.

Twelve candidates, laid out

With the time unknown, the hour branch is one of twelve, and the hour stem follows from the day stem. For a 甲 or 己 day the hours run 甲子, 乙丑, 丙寅, 丁卯, 戊辰, 己巳, 庚午, 辛未, 壬申, 癸酉, 甲戌, 乙亥. You can list the candidates for any day with the BaZi calculator by choosing the unknown-time option. A useful exercise is to note, for each candidate, the Ten God of the hour stem and whether the hour branch roots the Day Master. Often several candidates lead to the same conclusion, which tells you which parts of a reading are safe.

Narrowing with life events

Some practitioners narrow the hour by comparing candidate charts against known events — for example, which candidate's luck pillars change at ages that match major transitions. This method, sometimes called rectification, has real limits:

  1. Luck pillar timing changes by only months between adjacent hours, so it rarely separates candidates cleanly.
  2. Life events can be explained in many ways, which makes it easy to fit any candidate.
  3. Confirmation bias is strong.

If you try it, write down your prediction for each candidate before comparing, and treat the result as provisional.

Partial information

Partial information is still valuable:

What you knowWhat it narrows
"Morning"Roughly 卯, 辰, 巳 (05:00–11:00)
"Afternoon"Roughly 未, 申 (13:00–17:00)
"Night"Roughly 亥, 子, 丑 (21:00–03:00) — check the day boundary
Before or after a meal or shiftOften within one or two branches

When the range includes 23:00, the day pillar may also be uncertain; see the Zi hour and the day boundary.

Where to find a birth time

Birth certificates in many countries record the time. Hospital records, baptism records, family letters and baby books are other sources. If a time is remembered from family memory, note how confident the source is and whether it might be rounded. Once you have a time, apply true solar time and daylight saving checks.

Presenting a reading without the hour

A responsible reading with three pillars says so clearly, explains which conclusions depend on the hour, and avoids topics traditionally tied to the hour pillar. This is more honest than choosing an hour that "feels right" and building on it.

What to write down

Keep a short note with your three known pillars, the range of possible hours, and which conclusions depend on the hour. Update it if you find a record later. This note is also what you would give to a practitioner, so that they know from the start which parts of the chart are certain. You can generate the three-pillar chart at any time with the Day Master calculator.

Luck pillars without the hour

Luck pillars depend on the year stem, gender option and the time from birth to the nearest jie — not on the hour pillar itself. Without an exact time, the sequence of luck pillars is still known; only the starting age is uncertain, by at most about four months (one day of uncertainty equals about four months in the traditional three-days-per-year ratio). The luck pillar calculator shows the sequence, which is often enough for broad timing.

Key points

  • Without the hour, the year, month and day pillars are still usually certain, and so is the Day Master, unless the birth is near 23:00 or a solar term.
  • The hour pillar matters most for borderline strength, day–hour relations and later-life themes.
  • List all twelve hour candidates and note which conclusions stay the same across them.
  • Partial information, such as morning, afternoon or night, narrows the range considerably.
  • Rectification by life events has real limits, so treat its results as provisional.
  • Luck pillar sequences are known without the hour. Only the starting age is slightly uncertain.
  • Present three-pillar readings honestly, saying which parts depend on the hour.

Key terms in this article

Hour Pillar · 时柱
The hour pillar covers one of twelve two-hour periods (时辰), starting with 子 at 23:00–01:00. Its stem is derived from the day stem by the "five rats" rule. Because the boundary is solar, true solar time can move a birth into the neighbouring hour.
Four Pillars · 四柱
The Four Pillars are the year, month, day and hour of birth, each written as a heavenly stem over an earthly branch. Together they give eight characters, which is why the method is also called BaZi (八字, "eight characters"). The pillars are derived from the solar calendar of solar terms, not from the lunar month.
Day Master · 日主
The Day Master (日主 or 日元) is the heavenly stem of the day pillar. It represents the self in the chart, and every other stem is named relative to it as one of the Ten Gods. Its strength, judged mainly from the month branch and roots, is the starting point of nearly every reading.
True Solar Time · 真太阳时
True solar time is clock time corrected for longitude (four minutes per degree from the zone meridian) and the equation of time (up to about ±16 minutes over the year). It places the sun at its actual position, which is what traditional hours follow.

Common questions

Can I still find my useful element? Often, yes — season and roots carry most of the weight. Note it as provisional if the chart is close to balanced.

Do luck pillars need the hour? The starting age shifts slightly with the hour; the sequence of pillars does not change.

Is noon a good default? It is only a placeholder. Mark the hour as unknown rather than pretending noon is correct. See also what to do if you don't know your birth time.
