Reading Annual Pillars (Liu Nian)

How to read a BaZi annual pillar: when the year changes, how the year's stem and branch meet the natal chart and luck pillar, and a simple checklist for any year.

Reading Annual Pillars (Liu Nian)

Every year has its own pillar — 2026 is 丙午 — and that annual pillar (流年) interacts with your natal chart and current luck pillar. Annual reading is where BaZi becomes concrete, and also where overconfidence is most common.

When does the year change?

In BaZi the year changes at Li Chun, around 4 February, not at Chinese New Year. A January event belongs to the previous BaZi year.

YearAnnual pillarLi Chun (Beijing time)Stem element

Three layers

  1. Natal chart – the baseline.
  2. Luck pillar – the ten-year climate.
  3. Annual pillar – the weather of the year.

The annual pillar is read against both. A year that brings the useful element during an unfavourable luck pillar is mixed; the same year in a favourable luck pillar is stronger.

A checklist for any year

  1. Name the year's Ten Gods. What are the annual stem and branch relative to the Day Master?
  2. Useful or not? Does the year bring the useful element or the unfavourable one?
  3. Branch relations. Does the annual branch clash, combine or punish a natal branch — especially the day or month branch?
  4. Stem relations. Does the annual stem combine with the Day Master or a key natal stem?
  5. Activated storage. Does a clash open a storage branch?
  6. Luck interaction. Does the year clash or combine the current luck branch?

Example: a 丙午 year

For a 庚 Day Master, 丙 is Seven Killings and 午 holds 丁 (Direct Officer) — a year of pressure and responsibility. For a 甲 Day Master, the same year is Eating God and Hurting Officer — expression and output. For a 子 day branch, 午 clashes it. The same year reads differently for every chart.

Responsible reading

Annual readings describe themes, not fixed events. Write down what you expect and review it after the year; this is the best way to learn what the method can and cannot tell you.

How the annual pillar is calculated

The annual pillar advances one step through the sixty-pair cycle each year. 2024 was 甲辰, 2025 乙巳, 2026 丙午, 2027 丁未, 2028 戊申. Because the stems repeat every ten years and the branches every twelve, the same pillar returns every sixty years. The boundary is the exact moment of Li Chun, which falls on 3, 4 or 5 February depending on the year; the annual pillar calculator shows the exact instant for any year.

Stem and branch: two halves of a year

Many practitioners read the annual stem as the more visible, outward theme of the year and the annual branch as the deeper foundation. Some also say the stem is felt more in the first half of the year and the branch in the second, though others treat the year as a whole. Either way, read the two separately first:

  1. What is the annual stem's Ten God, and does it combine or clash with any natal stem?
  2. What does the annual branch hide, and does it combine, clash, harm or punish any natal branch?

Only then form an overall view.

The year and the luck pillar together

The luck pillar is the background for every year within it. Three situations are common:

SituationTypical reading
Year and luck both bring the useful elementA smoother year; the theme is amplified
Year brings useful element, luck brings unfavourableMixed; relief within a demanding decade
Year clashes the luck branchChange in the decade's theme during that year

When the annual branch is identical to the luck branch or the natal day branch (伏吟), practitioners note repetition and emphasis. When it clashes the day branch (反吟 in some usages), they note movement in personal life.

Year of one's own branch

The year whose branch matches your own year branch is popularly called 本命年. In BaZi it is one of several interactions to check, not a special verdict. A year that clashes your day branch or month branch usually deserves more attention than one matching your year branch.

A worked example for 2026

The 丙午 year brings strong fire. For a chart that is cold and wet — for example 壬 or 癸 water born in winter — fire is often the useful element, and 2026 is read as warming and helpful, provided the chart can hold the Wealth it represents. For a chart already dominated by fire, the same year adds excess, and practitioners look for water or earth in the luck pillar to balance it. Any chart with 子 in the day or month branch experiences the 子午 clash. A chart with 寅 and 戌 forms the 寅午戌 fire group with this year's 午.

Building an annual review habit

At the start of each year:

  1. Note the annual pillar's Ten Gods for your chart.
  2. Check its relations with your four branches and your current luck branch.
  3. Write three themes you expect.

At the end of the year, write what actually happened and compare. Over several years this shows which factors were meaningful for you, which is the honest way to learn the method.

Months inside the year

Each solar month also has its own pillar. The same checks apply on a smaller scale: a month whose branch clashes your day branch can mark a particular period within the year. The solar terms guide lists the month boundaries.

Common mistakes

  1. Changing the year on 1 January or at Chinese New Year instead of Li Chun.
  2. Reading the year without the luck pillar.
  3. Expecting specific events from a single clash.
  4. Ignoring that the same year reads differently for every chart.

Frequently asked questions

Is 本命年 unlucky? It is a popular belief; in BaZi it is one interaction among many.

Which matters more, stem or branch? The branch is usually considered more lasting; the stem more visible.

Can I read past years? Yes, and reviewing past years is the best way to test a reading.

Annual pillars for the next few years

YearPillarElements
2026丙午Fire over fire
2027丁未Fire over earth
2028戊申Earth over metal
2029己酉Earth over metal
2030庚戌Metal over earth

Each changes at Li Chun. The annual pillar calculator shows the Ten Gods of each year for your own Day Master.

A full worked reading of one year

Take a 辛 metal Day Master, judged weak, with earth as the useful element and fire as unfavourable. The natal branches are 卯 (year), 午 (month), 酉 (day) and 子 (hour). The current luck pillar is 戊戌. Now read 2026, 丙午:

  1. Ten Gods: 丙 is Direct Officer for 辛; 午 holds 丁 (Seven Killings) and 己 (Indirect Resource). The year is dominated by Officer stars.
  2. Useful or not: fire is unfavourable, but 午 also carries some 己 earth, the useful element.
  3. Stem relations: 丙 combines with the Day Master 辛 (丙辛合). The Day Master is bound — traditionally a sign of commitment, obligation or attraction to an outside force.
  4. Branch relations: the annual 午 repeats the natal month 午 (伏吟) and clashes the hour branch 子. 午 also forms a 卯午 destruction with the year branch, a minor relation.
  5. Luck interaction: the 戊戌 luck pillar brings useful earth; 午 and 戌 form a half fire group, which increases fire but also generates earth from fire.

Summary: a year of strong Officer pressure and binding commitments, partly offset by the earth of the luck pillar. A careful reader would describe themes — responsibility, external demands, a commitment that ties the Day Master — and would avoid predicting specific events.

Months and days

For practical planning within a year, practitioners sometimes look at the month pillars (each starting at a jie solar term) and occasionally specific days through the Chinese almanac. The same checklist applies at each scale, with the larger cycles taking priority.

Key points

  • The annual pillar changes at the exact Li Chun instant, not on 1 January or at Chinese New Year.
  • Read the natal chart, the luck pillar and the annual pillar as three layers: baseline, climate and weather.
  • Name the annual stem's and branch's Ten Gods, and decide whether they bring the useful or unfavourable element.
  • Check stem combinations with the Day Master, and branch relations with all four natal branches and the luck branch.
  • A year that clashes the day or month branch usually deserves more attention than a year matching the year branch (本命年).
  • Describe themes rather than predicting events, and review each year afterwards to learn what the method shows for you.
  • Month pillars inside the year follow the same checklist on a smaller scale.

Key terms in this article

Annual Pillar · 流年
The annual pillar is the stem-branch of a calendar year, changing at 立春. It is read against both the natal chart and the current luck pillar; a year that repeats the luck pillar exactly (岁运并临) is watched closely.
Luck Pillars · 大运
Luck pillars are ten-year pillars that step forward or backward through the sixty cycle from the month pillar. They are the main timing layer of BaZi, read for how each period's elements interact with the natal chart.
Branch Clash · 地支六冲
Branches opposite each other clash: 子午, 丑未, 寅申, 卯酉, 辰戌, 巳亥. A clash shakes both branches and their hidden stems. Clashes from luck or annual pillars to the day or month branch are traditionally watched closely.
Start of Spring (Li Chun) · 立春
立春, when the sun reaches 315° ecliptic longitude around 4 February, begins the BaZi year and the 寅 month. Someone born on 1 February belongs to the previous BaZi year even if Chinese New Year has passed — or not passed.
